Reception

Welcome to our Reception Class family page

This is going to be an exciting year in your child’s learning journey and our aim is to provide an enabling and stimulating environment in which your children feel happy to explore and learn.

Take a look at the Induction Powerpoint for 2023 Starters. It shares key information, routines and important dates for your diary.

You can also read our Early Year’s policy on this website which further documents our Intent, Implementation and Impact of the curriculum.

Entry and Exit

The children and parents enter and exit the school through the right-hand side green gate and wait on the path. To begin with parents are invited to bring their child into the setting and as the first few weeks progress we encourage the children to come into the setting independently.

Early Reading

In Reception, children learn to read in a story-rich environment.  We share books every day and learn about the world through a range of fiction and non-fiction books. Children learn to read through daily phonics sessions and learn cued articulation to support their understanding of the 44 sounds of the English language.  Children are encouraged to develop their writing skills through extensive imaginative play and exploration of the environment.

At Silverdale Primary Academy we use Read Write Inc (RWI) for our systematic approach to teaching phonics. For more information please click below;

Reading at Home

We want to encourage parents and carers to enjoy reading for pleasure with their children. We have a range of books at school that the children can bring home to share with an adult at home. This is in addition to our decodable books. The children are able to choose books from our school library. We would encourage you to:

  • Read favourite stories over and over again
  • Read some stories at a higher level than they can read themselves.
  • Listen to them reading their home/school books

Class Dojo

ClassDojo is a school communication platform that teachers and families use every day to build close-knit communities by sharing what's being learned in the classroom home through photos, videos and messages.

Each class has their own individual DoJo page. Online classrooms are created, and parents are then invited to connect to the class through an individual, personalised link. Once connected, parents can see their child's class page where teachers will share updates and photos about what the children have been doing at school. It is important to note that these pages are not public, they are private and can only be viewed by connected staff and by parents of children in the same class.

 Once connected, parents will be able to make use of the direct messaging section that allows them to directly contact their child's class teacher. This is a very useful tool that supports effective communication between home and school.
